Creating Your Own Web Home Page (Session 0441)

Presenters: Jill Powell and Bill Jenkins, Cornell

Jill and Bill have an in-library course they are adapting for this purpose. An outline may be found on their library home page. This fee-based ($20.00) workshop is intended for engineering faculty members, rather than ELD members. This fee-based workshop (US$20) is intended for engineering faculty members; ELD members are also welcome. Note: This session, #0441, does not appear as a "ticketed event" on the advance conference program. Enrollment is limited to 35; registration is required.

ASEE Society-Wide Picnic (Session 0605)

Cost: $12.00

Your first official opportunity to network with fellow engineering librarians, representing libraries large and small from the U. S. and Canada (and sometimes from outside North America!). For early arrivals to D. C., there are usually pre-picnic ELD outings to join as well.

ELD Get Acquainted Session (Session 1241)

Attendees introduce themselves and briefly describe local events and major decisions in a round-robin format. Information tidbits from this first "technical" session can be another valuable starting point for one-to-one networking throughout the conference. Patent Information In A Changing World (Session 2341)

"How Will Electronic Publishing Affect Me??" (Session 3341)

ASEE Mini-Plenary Session

Moderator: John Saylor, Director, Engineering Library, Cornell University

Panelists will address different aspects of the dramatic changes e-publishing will bring to the traditional triangle of publishers, libraries, and faculty members/other library users.

The motivation for this session is to "reach out" to the typical engineering faculty member, who may have only a rudimentary awareness of the widespread impact electronic publishing will have on academe.

Speakers:

• Jay Lucker, Adjunct Professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Simmons College and Director Emeritus, MIT Libraries -- "Tenure, Research, and Publishing in an Electronic Environment"

• Terry Noreault, Director, Office of Research, OCLC -- "New Paradigms in Publishing: The Electronic Revolution"

• David Martin, Professor of Materials Science, Iowa State U., "Electronic Publishing as Viewed by the Individual Faculty Member"

  David Martin chairs Iowa State University's Committee on Intellectual Property Rights and chaired the task force with drafted ISU's current Strategic Plan for Information Technology. He was the principal architect of two virtual library/electronic publishing systems:

  • NSF's National Engineering Education Delivery System (NEEDS) http://www.needs.org/needs/; and
  • DOE's Undergraduate Computational Engineering and Science (UCES) program http://www.krellinst.org/UCES/

  His Information Technology research centers on standards-based systems for information description, discovery, and retrieval; his physical science research centers on simulating materials behavior and acoustics for monitoring high-level nuclear wastes.

Note: This is the first ELD-sponsored mini-plenary session in several years, so please promote it to faculty from YOUR institution who will be attending ASEE in 1996.

ELD Wrap-Up Session (Session 3641)

Moderator: Linda Musser (Penn State)

An insightful discussion leader will assist the group in wrapping up (some of the!!) loose ends from the previous four days. This process can be exceptionally valuable as you consider what information from the conference you want to take home with you.
