Ford Motor Company's Digital Librarian Award Engineering Libraries Division Officers and Committees 1997-98 |
Message from the ChairASEE Annual Conference is coming soon to a city near you! Actually that city is Seattle, Washington! The dates are June 29 to July 1. I am looking forward to the well-planned conference. Do you realize that 60 or more engineering librarians attended last year's conference in Milwaukee? The Engineering Library Division is a welcoming group of people who share common needs and enjoy each other's company. If you are a member of the Engineering Libraries Division and have never attended a conference, please consider it this year and every year! As a veteran of 13 conferences, I highly recommend attending the annual conference. ELD membership gives you access to a network of colleagues through the listserv, website, duplicate exchange, directory, and newsletter. Attending the annual conference gives you additional benefits. This is your opportunity to attend sessions tailored to the needs of engineering librarians. Please read details about the sessions in Beth Brin's article in this issue of the newsletter. Attending the conference each year has given me many benefits. I have especially enjoyed: Opportunities to learn from colleagues' experiences. Sometimes people convey information as speakers, poster presenters, or reporters of library activities. Other times, I learned from discussions over a cup of coffee or a beer. Late night chats with colleagues in hotels and college dormitories. It has been very enlightening to learn about other colleges, universities, and people. Short trips with colleagues to unique places. I especially remember the Portland Rose Gardens, Oregon Coast, and Jasper National Park in Canada. These too have been wonderful times to discuss and enjoy time together. Colleagues at my home university. As a first time attendee, I sat next to a Purdue staff member (that I had never met) on the plane flying to Atlanta. We had dinner that evening and got acquainted. I gained insights to the Women in Engineering and Freshman Engineering Programs at Purdue. At another conference, I presented a paper with professors in technology and construction management. Annual ELD banquets in wonderful restaurants. I particularly savor and remember food in New Orleans, Edmonton, and Los Angeles. I hereby present my TOP TEN LIST for attending the ASEE Annual Conference. There is on particular order to the list: Learn about the latest information on web page design, instruction in webbed environment, ABET accreditation, digital libraries, technology update, and aerospace engineering information. Meet colleagues who work with engineering and technology students and faculty. Share innovations from my work with others. Network with people that have walked in my shoes. Meet people who have helped me in the past! Borrow ideas from other ELD members. Discuss possible solutions to old problems. Commiserate with old colleagues. Experience local eateries and entertainment. Visit the Great Northwest. I hope to see you all in Seattle!
Respectfully submitted, Conference Program UpdateGreetings! Did you recently receive the March issue of ASEE Prism? And find the Preliminary Program for the Annual Conference enclosed? I hope you have your calendar marked to join me and your other ELD colleagues in Seattle, June 28-July 1! By registering early (before April 15), your registration fees for the conference are $270, a savings of $50 from the advance registration fee! So register early, if you can. The December newsletter did include a listing of the programs being planned. With the exception of a few minor changes in descriptions, the program has not changed. Most of the speakers have been confirmed, and are hard at work preparing their presentations. There will be programs on instruction in the web environment, accreditation issues, digital libraries, an update on information technology possibilities, aerospace engineering information, and eight poster sessions on a variety of interesting topics. ELD will also be having the annual get-acquainted session, a professional issues discussion, an annual business meeting, and various ticketed events (more on that shortly). In addition to the official program, Kate Lee is organizing a 5K run, starting from Seward Park on Sunday at 12:30 pm, and librarians at the University of Washington Engineering Library will host a tour of their facility on Wednesday morning (for all but the Extended Executive Committee Members... sorry about that folks!!). On Monday, just after the get-acquainted session, Locke Morrisey will be organizing small "lunch groups", dutch treat. Mel DeSart will be organizing some additional informal social activities as well, including a Mariners-Rockies game, and perhaps some microbrewery visits. Stay tuned to ELDNET-L for those announcements! I will be including in the May newsletter the final program details, with speakers and locations included. For a preview, look at the ELD Web Page, at: http://www.englib.cornell.edu/eld/conf98.html and on the ASEE 1998 Conference Web Page, under Technical Sessions, at: http://www.asee.org/conferences/html/annual_98.htm Now, a word about ticketed events. These are events which have additional costs, and so require you to sign-u p specifically for the given event. I've listed here six ticketed events that relate directly to ELD in some way. I highly recommend the first two events for all attendees, and the others as appropriate. SocietyWide Picnic, Pacific Science Center Session 0705, Sunday, June 28, 7:00~10:00pm $15.00/person The Picnic is an informal event that officially opens the conference; it is a great opportunity for ELD members to gather, meeting new attendees and renewing former acquaintances. Look for baloons and signs that mark out the ELD gathering place! The site of the picnic, the Pacific Science Center, will be open to only ASEE conference attendees and their guests during this time period. The Center hosts 5 buildings filled with interactive science displays and activities. There will be buses from the convention center to the Pacific Science Center, and also buses taking people back to conference hotels from the Pacific Science Center. ELD Annual Banquet, TULIo Session 2741, Tuesday, June 30, 6:30-10:30 pm $40.00/person Moderator: Mel DeSart This local restaurant has great reviews from those "in the know" in Seattle. It features Italian fare with a TULIo flare, and has a great atmosphere. The banquet follows the Annual Business Meeting and is a great way to unwind after a full day. A favorite event of mine, please consider creating another memorable experience with your ELD colleagues and guests by joining us at TULIo. The restaurant is within walking distance, about 6 blocks from the Convention Center, in the Hotel Vintage Park. PIC IV Awards Lunch, Seattle Sheraton Session 3484, Wednesday, July 1, 12:30-2:00 pm $24.00/person Divisions within the Professional Interest Council (PIC) IV, including ELD, give awards during this luncheon. The awards presented by ELD could include the Homer I. Bernhardt Award, and the Ford Motor Company's Digital Librarian Award. The luncheon is an opportunity to showcase aspects of ELD through the awards presented. ELD officers and other interested ELD members are encouraged to attend. ELD Extended Executive Committee Meeting and Breakfast, Seattle Sheraton Session 3141, Wednesday, July 1, 7:00-8:15 am $14.00/person All members of the Extended Executive Committee (officers, committee and subcommittee chairs and co-chairs, editors, and archivist), please register for this event. The Extended Executive Committee will complete the business of operating the division for the coming year, which includes following up on issues raised at the Annual Business Meeting. Creating Your Own Web Page for Beginners, UW campus Session 0241, Sunday, 8:30-12 noon $20.00/person Moderator: Fred O'Bryant Co-moderator: Jill Powell Register for this workshop to learn how to create your own HTML documents in order to publish text and image files for classroom or professional use. This will be a hands-on workshop in a PC facility on the UW campus; attendance is limited to 20 people. Attendees should meet at the ASEE Registration Desk at 8:30 am. Advanced Home Page Creation: Forms, Frames and Image Maps, UW campus Session 0541, Sunday, 2:30-5:30 pm $20.00/person Moderator: Jill Powell Co-moderator: Fred O'Bryant This workshop provides an opportunity to learn about making your web pages more interactive and elegant by including forms, image maps, and frames. This will be a hands-on workshop in a Macintosh facility on the UW campus; attendance is limited to 15 people. Attendees should meet at the ASEE Registration Desk at 2:30 pm. Whew, what a selection from which to choose! Please do consider signing up for one or two or...! Do you want MORE information?? The ASEE Conference Web Page (url listed earlier) includes information on accomodations, registration, tours, Seattle sights, and other related topics. The ELD Web Page (url listed earlier) will also host and link to useful information. Both are great resources for planning conference-related activities. In the way of travel, I can report the following: the largest, nearest airport is Sea-Tac Airport (short for Seattle-Tacoma), south of downtown Seattle. As you would expect, many airlines fly into Sea-Tac. For a listing, check out the Sea-Tac Airport web site at: http://www.portseattle.org/seatac/seatac.html Shuttle services are available from the Sea-Tac airport to Downtown Seattle-prices vary. I pulled up a couple Internet sites for limousine services with prices of $35-$40, but there's more research to be done! AmTrak does serve the Seattle area, check out their web site at: http://www.amtrak.com/ That's just to whet your appetite; there's more to discover! I do hope to see you there. I think you'll like it! And many dedicated colleagues are diligently working to ensure that you will! Beth Brin, Program Chair Opportunity to Serve ELDYou are invited to serve as an ELD Officer. This is an excellent opportunity for continued professional and personal growth. There are two positions open: (1) ELD Director, and (2) ELD Secretary-Treasurer. Some questions about the specific duties of these positions may be answered by the ELD By-Laws, other questions may be directed to any member of the nominating committee. Self-nominations are permitted-even encouraged. Names of nominees may be given to any committee member. **Let us hear from you!!** A list of candidates for each position will be published in the May _ELD Newsletter_. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the 1998 ELD Business Meeting. Members of the ELD Nominating Committee are: Ann Ward (909) 869-4670 or aeward@csupomona.edu, Christy Hightower (619-534-1216) or chightower@ucsd.edu and Andy Stewart, Chair, (573) 341-4007. Thanks in advance for your response. Andy Stewart Chair, Nominations Committee ELDNET-L has moved!Hopefully, all of you reading this are aware of this, but just in case... In December '97, ELDNET-L, the electronic discussion list sponsored by ELD, moved to a new machine and now runs with a different virtual machine software. The new list address is ELDNET-L@UKANS.EDU and the new virtual machine software is "listproc" rather than the old "listserv" that many of you are probably familiar with. If any of you are new to ELD or otherwise unfamiliar with ELDNET-L, please drop me a note at desart@ukans.edu. I can subscribe you to the list and provide you with list commands and other useful information. Mel DeSart Editor, ELDNET-L ELD Membership NewsSince I last "ran the numbers", we have about 23 new members, 7 permanently lapsed members, and 27 folks "in limbo", as I prefer to think of those folks who aren't reading this newsletter because they have forgotten to renew their memberships! I have been a bit "out of commission" while bringing my new library into existence, but I am now back in the swing of things, recruiting like mad. Fred O'Bryant is working on the new edition of the ELD Membership Directory, and elsewhere in this newsletter the new member interviewers will be sharing with you what they have discovered about the latest new members. If you missed my ELDNET-L post requesting testimonials from ELDers about the benefits of ELD membership, please contact me if you would like to contribute to this effort. Please continue to send me your "leads" regarding possible new ELD members- or those who might want to "return to the fold." Glee Willis, ELD Membership Chair ELD Newsletter is on the WebThe most recent ELD Newsletter, December 1997, is now available from the ELD Web site http://www.englib.cornell.edu/eld/.
